Abstract
This study addresses the competitiveness of aquaculture companies from the perspective of operations management in order to improve the efficiency of cultivation processes. After identify the main factors that determine the competitiveness of farming processes through a review of scientific literature, three independent empirical applications are developed. The first study proposes a model to explain the profitability of marine fish farming companies, with an empirical application to the breeding of seabream (Sparus aurata) and seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in Spain. It is developed a second empirical application that aims the economic optimization of seabream cultivation by determining production strategies that maximize the present operational profits. The third work aims to analyze the influence of the different environmental conditions along the Mediterranean Sea on the seabream production strategies and the economic performance of the same. In the last two applications, a bioeconomic model of seabream fattening and a particle swarm algorithm are used for the simulation and optimization of the cultivation process respectively.
