Abstract
This paper studies the evolution of a number of firms with internal and external research and development (R&D) expenditure, and the percentage they invest in R&D out of the total expenditure on innovation, differentiating between large firms and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The source of information we used is the database of the Technological Innovation Panel of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The reasons why firms invest in one innovation variable or another are explained in the document differentiating between the organizations based on their size.
