Resumen

We provide biographical information about the Galician naturalist Fermín Bescansa Casares (1876-1957) and, in the light of the recent discovery and subsequent taxonomic revisión of his herbarium, we discuss his contribution to marine phycology. The herbarium contains approximately 1.000 sheets representing 198 taxa, collected between 1905 and 1950 in La Coruña and Bayona (Galicia, N.W. Iberian Península). As a result of this revisión we correct certain of the species cited in Bescansa's work, commenting upon the more interesting taxa in the herbarium and upon the floristic variations which may have occurred in this región over the last 50 years.
