Abstract

CMV infection ís a common complication following heart transplantation (HT). In add it,ion to direct effects, such as viral syndrome or invasive organ disease, CMV is associated with the onset of so-called indirect effects, which result from the interaction of the virus with the host immune system, which can lead to an increased immunosuppression, increased risk of malignancy and increased risk of graft dysfunction, leading to acute rejection or cardiac allograft vasculopathy development. The primary endpoint of our study was to assess the incidence of CMV infection a.fter HT in a cohort of 222 patients in standard clinical practice and to study the influence of CMV infection during the first year after HT on long-term prognosis. Secondary endpoints were the evaluation of the risk factors of developing CMV infection, as well as the influence of donar and recipient CMV serologic status on prognosis after HT...
