Abstract

This study aims to determine the particularities of the Spanish verb system acquired by learners whose mother tongue is Russian and to identify what causes these particularities. By analysing more than 5,000 correct and incorrect verb uses by these learners in two corpora, one of them created specifically for this research, this study aims to determine the particular characteristics of Russian-speaking learners’ interlanguage, identifying consolidated verb uses, uses with a low level of acquisition, and incorrect uses which show a tendency towards fossilisation. Additionally, this study aims to provide an explanation for the causes of these uses, establishing links between the uses of the verb forms and a series of factors that have an influence on their appearance. The learners’ interlanguage error analysis model was applied and the results of the analysis of the verb form uses were interpreted considering the predictions of the contrastive analysis of Spanish and Russian verb systems. The results from studies concerning the factors which determine foreign language acquisition and conclusions of studies that focus on the verb system acquisition are also taken in consideration.
