Abstract

The main aim of this research was to check the effectiveness of the keyword mnemonic in the acquisition of Basque vocabulary, with high and low image words when there was immediate and long-term recall and short and long lists of words to find the effectiveness of the keyword method in the acquisition of vocabulary in Basque with high and low image words with long-term recall, without a task of immediate recall with short lists of words. We also wanted to see the effectiveness of keyword mnemonics in the acquisition of long-term Basque vocabulary, in the absence of immediate recall test with short word lists, and the influence of short-term recall on long-term memory term. For this purpose, students of Secondary School of the province of A Coruña participated. The effectiveness of the different methods of keyword production (colleagues, researcher, participants) was compared and the method consisting on learning by repetition was used as a control group. The participants' image control and vividness capacity was also measured, in order to check whether this fact had influence over the recall. The results showed that in the normal immediate recall of the total number of words, the keyword method was superior when the colleagues generated the keyword, compared to the other conditions: researcher, participants and repetition.
