Abstract
The main purpose of our investigation was the developing of a teaching unit based on the Theory of the Nuclear Concepts, which would contribute to an improvement of the process of teaching-learning of geometry. The organization of the students cognitive structure has a key role in the acquisition of knowledge. If knowledge is organized as a network and there are concepts that are in itself emphasized, the teaching process should be developed from these concepts. This is the main idea of the Theory of the Nuclear Concepts. Starting from the proposals of this theory, its application in the teaching-learning process has been proved, in order to alter and analyze its effects. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques, one has obtained a reference network that reflected the participating students cognitive structure and, from it, a teaching unit has been developed. It has been applied in different schools and afterwards the results of the experimenting group and the control group have been compared, in each of them. The evaluation of the learning process was directed not only to the school results, having also included the analysis of the changes in the students cognitive structure. The results obtained reinforce the Theory of the Nuclear Concepts, show how you can improve the school results and monitor the changes in the students cognitive structure, through the application of a teaching unit based on its proposals
