Resumen

Introduction Obesity, chronic disease in relation to excess adiposity, apart from being frequent in our consultations, has a high cost for patients and health systems. Aims To analyze the impact of a structured group therapy (TGE) on obesity, antopometry, body composition, evolution of comorbidities, drug consumption, prevalence of metabolic syndrome, functional level and staging of obesity. Material and methods Randomized clinical trial, approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Galicia. Obese patients attended in our consultations were randomized to participate in a TGE program (intervention group = IG), compared to the control group (CG) that received a single session and followed up on the consultation. Results Regarding to the CG, patients in the IG lose 7.1 kg and 9.3 cm waist. They also decrease their total body fat by 6.2 kg plus estimated visceral fat. They also decreased their triglyceride levels, symptoms related to gastroesophageal reflux, psychopathology and asthma. They improved their functionality, decreased consumption of psychotropic drugs and insulin doses. In addition, they improved their score in obesity staging and decreased the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. All this in a meaningful way. Conclusions Our group intervention has proven to be effective in improving anthropometric parameters, drug consumption, comorbidities and obesity staging.
