Abstract

Despite public authorities are highly concerned about the persistence and growth of shanty towns in cities, they often fail in the correct management of the problem due to their short-term goals. In this research, the design, management and implementation of public policies that facilitate access housing of people living in shanty towns, are assessed from the point of view of sustainable development. For this aim, a mixed methodological program was carried out, through combining different qualitative and quantitative research techniques for the study of data obtained from a questionnaire and in deep interviews. As a result, the study shows that the actions should not only be limited to providing access to adequate housing, but should also require more extensive cross-cutting projects in which the socioeconomic adaptation of the affected families has been considered. This study provides some lines of action to improve the efficiency of this type of public policies, helping to generate not only important socioeconomic benefits, but also environmental and urban benefits.
